Behind the scenes with the Zulu’s.

Embarking on a visual journey that transcends time was a tough gig. In our recent photo series, we delve into the profound allure of warriors across cultures. As we navigate the complexities of our rapidly evolving world, I found myself pondering a fundamental question: Why do these ancient figures matter today? In an era dominated by technology, our traditions and cultural heritage risk slipping away. We ventured into the remote corners of third-world countries where time seems to stand still.

Drawing inspiration from my roots in Southern Africa’s Kwa-Zulu Natal, the very heart of Zulu culture, I felt compelled to illuminate a warrior tribe often overshadowed—the Zulu’s.

Within the tapestry of the Zulu’s rich history, shaped by the indomitable Shaka Zulu in the late 1800s, a compelling narrative awaited discovery. My dedicated team, committed to authenticity, unearthed practicing Zulus—rejecting the diluted versions found in urban areas. Phakela, my ‘Shaka Zulu’ figure, stands as a symbol of leadership, commanding an army of over 10,000 warriors. Their traditional attire, formidable spears, and unwavering spirit became the visual language of my art.

In expressing my gratitude for my team’s unwavering commitment, particularly Phakela’s inspiring ‘can do’ attitude amidst some less than ideal weather conditions, we’ve crafted visuals that transcend the ordinary.

Through this lens, I extend an invitation to each one of you to join me in a journey beyond the familiar, exploring a world where warriors and tradition coexist against the ever-changing backdrop of modernity.
