Drawing from my encounters, where the Zulu’s demonstrate unparalleled dedication to safeguarding their leader, I envisioned the Commander standing resolutely as his battalion formed a protective circle around him. His unwavering confidence during the shoot validated the success of this vision.

When preparing for a photo shoot, I prefer to have the outcome envisioned before setting foot on location. My preference for wide-angle lenses adds an additional layer of intimacy to my photographs, albeit accompanied by its unique set of challenges. With lower focal lengths requiring proximity, capturing buffaloes posed the need to find a herd with distinct personalities, ones more amenable to human presence.

Sometimes, the magic of an image unfolds in ways that defy meticulous planning. The timely appearance of wildebeest in the background added an unexpected yet harmonious element, grounding the composition in its wild surroundings. Under Shaka's reign, the Zulus were sworn to protect this land, and as Commander Phakela takes center stage, I am hopeful that his presence will contribute to the flourishing of species in this untouched wilderness.

Just as in the world of finance, where the unexpected can strike at any moment, in the wild, one must be ever-vigilant, ready to adapt and respond swiftly to the changing landscape. It is this parallel that makes this image so powerful to me – a testament to the resilience and adaptability required to thrive in both nature and the world of high finance.

The parallels between the bygone Dutch militia and the contemporary Zulus were too captivating to ignore. Thus, the audacious decision was made to recreate 'The Night Watch' with the Zulu warriors. In the heart of Zululand, much like Rembrandt's militia, they protect their land under the leadership of their King and Commander.

In this moment, tradition is not discarded but transformed. The Zulu Commander, usually associated with the stoic adherence to age-old customs, reveals a multifaceted identity. His stoicism softens into contemplation, and the tableau becomes a canvas where tradition and innovation paint strokes of coexistence.

Capturing the essence of buffalo through the lens proved to be a formidable challenge. Renowned for their aggression, cunning nature, and intelligence, these creatures posed a threat that demanded both skill and extreme caution.

This image holds a profound significance for me, extending beyond the visual spectacle. It captures the vulnerability of a warrior as formidable as my subject, standing alone in the rain – a poignant metaphor for the struggles and solitude that echo in the lives of many.

As I reflect on 2023, I would like to highlight some of the principles which got us to this point almost a year down the line. Starting a new company in a new space alongside my day job in finance has not been easy but I believe that in pursuing anything in life, there are a few key criteria for success. Research, a clear vision of where you want to go, unshakable discipline, uncompromising pursuit of excellence, and careful consideration of your approach.
