Latest Release - Impi

Navigating the challenges of shooting in Kwa-Zulu Natal, particularly the unpredictable weather, proved to be a test of both preparation and adaptability. As I meticulously planned this shoot from my home in Los Angeles, I anticipated the possibility of rain. However, my connection to South Africa's dynamic weather patterns had dulled over time, and I found myself confronted with monsoon-like storms that demanded resilience and rapid adaptation.

It is with this backdrop that the title of the image, "Impi," takes on profound significance. Translated as "a force renowned for their formidable bravery and indomitable warrior spirit," the name perfectly encapsulates the essence of these individuals. Their unwavering toughness in the face of cold and rain left an indelible mark on me, serving as a testament to their resilience.

In conveying my vision to the Commander, I articulated a simple directive: "I want to capture you in formation, as if you were stealthily advancing towards me." Fortunately, he didn't interpret this literally, but his response was nothing short of cinematic. In an instant, nine men approached me with a precision that would make even the most seasoned fighter uneasy, showcasing a natural flair for the dramatic.

Sometimes, the magic of an image unfolds in ways that defy meticulous planning. The timely appearance of wildebeest in the background added an unexpected yet harmonious element, grounding the composition in its wild surroundings. Under Shaka's reign, the Zulus were sworn to protect this land, and as Commander Phakela takes center stage, I am hopeful that his presence will contribute to the flourishing of species in this untouched wilderness.

While South Africa often grapples with negative press surrounding poaching, I aspire for this image to serve as a poignant reminder of the commitment to preserving the unspoiled beauty of this region, symbolized by the formidable force embodied by Commander Phakela and his warriors.
